a multispecies habitat grafted from living trees..(2024)
As an intern I joined Terreform ONE, a Brooklyn based non-profit research group for architecture and urban design. Their aim is to combat the extinction of species on our planet through design measures. During my time I worked on the Fab Tree Hab which is a multispecies habitat they built in upstate NY. It uses the technique of tree grafting in which living willows are fused into on consequitive organism. The young trees are woven through steel scaffolding which is supported by wooden frames. As the trees grow, they become stronger and will eventually be able to support the structure so that the wooden frames can be taken out and reused in another location.
The trees will not only be able to form walls and roof of an inhabitable structure but also host a multitude of interspecies habitats, encouraging biodiversity.
